Classical Music Festival at the Blue Frog Coffeehouse

There will be a Classical Music Festival on Sunday November 18, 2007 from 12noon - 5pm at the Blue Frog Coffeehouse, 64 Main Street in Cortland, NY. It will feature music for brass ensemble, violin, flute and piano, as well as several classical guitarists and a celtic harp duo. Enjoy an afternoon of classical music in an informal atmosphere. Admission is free.

There will be several new performers at the upcoming festival. Walter Liszewski, a classical guitarist from the Syracuse area, is new to the festival stage. This will also be the first time that the Celtic harp duo formed by Lisa Craig Fenwick and Melissa Collins will participate in the festival series. They may be more familiar to those in the Ithaca area, having appeared as the "Enchantment" duo at the Ithaca Festival.

Music will begin at 12noon with a performance by the Crown City Brass, with Mark Baxendell and Brian Shelley (trumpets), Terry Martens (French horn), Mike Poole and Phillip Rumsey (trombones) and Cheri White (euphonium). This will be followed by Lois Pfister (violin), Maria Mucaria (flute) and Marina Gorelaya (piano) presenting the 5th Brandenburg Concerto by J.S. Bach. Mucaria and Gorelaya will then perform the Sonata for Flute and Piano by Francis Poulenc, a movement from the Concerto in d minor for Flute and Orchestra opus 69 by Bernard Molique and Le Bouquet de Roses opus 408 for Piccolo and Piano by Eugene Damare. Tina Shattuck (flute) will play the Suite Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80 by Gabriel Faure. Mucaria (flute) will then be joined by Aaron Baier (guitar) in music that includes traditional Irish tunes.

Beginning at 1:30 there will be presentations by some individual performers. Donald Stone Sade, a classical guitarist from the Rochester/Mexico area will play music from various time periods and composers, including Dowland, Giuliani and Yocoh. Tekla Babyak, a graduate student in musicology at Cornell University, will perform music for piano. Babyak gave a concert themed "A Tour throught the History of Classical Music" at the Homer Center for the Arts in late October of this year.

At 3:00pm there will be additional music for the classical guitar presented by Dave Richman, Walter Liszewski and Chris Woodard. Richman will be playing Lute Suite in e minor #1 by J.S. Bach. Finally, the festival will end with the Celtic harp duo, Lisa Craig Fenwick and Melissa Collins, that begins at 4pm.

The Classical Music Festival series is supported by the New York State Music Fund established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Additional support was obtained through a NYSCA Decentralization Grant sponsored by St. Mary's Church in Cortland and administered by the Cultural Resources Council of Onondaga County.

Thanks to the NYS Music Fund and Decentralization grants, this will be the fourth festival in the series presented by Cortland Music during this calendar year. The series also included a concert of Renaissance music called "Shakespeare's Colors" featuring the Elizabethan Conversation duo at the United Community Church in Cortland, and "A Tour through the History of Classical Music" with musicologist Tekla Babyak at the Center for the Arts in Homer. Next year, four more festivals are planned, as well as concerts by individuals and small ensembles.
